Resilience Helps Us Cope & Rebalance

Experts from many branches of the social science fields recommend developing resilience to help us cope and rebalance. Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of trauma or tragedy, threats or other significant sources of stress. Yet resilience is complex and our abilities may vary in differing degrees across multiple domains of life including the workplace, educational setting, personal life and within relationships. The main factors contributing to our success in developing resilience are such things as: adopting a positive attitude; having a good self-image; being able to effectively manage feelings and impulses in a healthy manner; and having good communication skills.

Methods and Skills Offered Within This Course

The good news is we can learn resilience skills!  In addition to the main factors listed above, resilience skill development involves such practices as: recognizing stress in the body (or somatic sensing); building physical hardness (or learning physical emotion regulation); strengthening the relaxation response; and increasing positive emotions.

The Emotional Body® method helps you develop the ability to sense, reconnect with, and manage your emotions. Using evidence-based methods and gentle somatic sensing lessons participants learn skills in emotional fluency and physical emotion regulation. Physical self-regulation of emotion requires developing detailed somatic sensing skills and a knowledge of how these translate into emotional expression. Somatic is a term that relates to the body —soma is Greek for body. Somatic sensing is physically “tuning into” many aspects of our bodies using all our senses (sight, smell, taste, sound, touch, and movement). Somatic sensing lessons raise awareness of minute movements of muscles, skin temperature, pulse, breathing patterns, and any feelings like tingling, looseness or tightness of certain areas, resistance or ease of movement, and overall physical attitudes or intentions with movement. These somatic sensing skills are then connected to specific evidence-based patterns of emotion and their regulation, resiliency skill development, and methods for rebalancing and calming the nervous system.

Learning how emotions emerge and express in and through our bodies can:

  • Assist with unlocking physical disconnections, disembodiment, and numbness often associated with trauma
  • Provide insights into disruptive behaviors, habits, and avoidance tactics
  • Strengthen our ability to establish personal boundaries and communicate our needs
  • Open more achievable pathways to optimism, happiness, and tranquility
  • Develop and refine our capacities for personal control and the ability to deal with challenges

Instructor Bio:

Laura Bond (Lead Instructor/Trainer) is the founder of the Emotional Body® method and is an internationally recognized somatic practitioner and scholar dedicating her career to providing safe and reliable techniques for physical emotion regulation, and the development of emotional expression and somatic resiliency methods. In addition to her expertise in acting, directing, and voice production, her primary research centers around the development of a physical emotion regulation method using somatic education philosophies with the evidence-based emotional effector patterns (EEP). After 20 years of practice-research, teaching and writing in this area she developed new ways to teach the EEP and founded a new method for physical emotional regulation and somatic resiliency, called the Emotional Body® method. Her research included collaborating and co-teaching with Feldenkrais® method practitioners since 2007 and an intensive teacher-training sabbatical in Chile in 2006 with neuroscientist and research psychologist Susana Bloch, an original member of the team that discovered the EEP. Laura is a full professor at the University of North Carolina Asheville and the author of The Emotional Body: A Method for Physical Self-Regulation, which is the core text used in Emotional Body courses. Testimonials

“The Emotional Body offers a fascinating physiologically based way to access emotions and then safely return to a neutral state. What I appreciated most about this training was the way in which the instructors encouraged a gentle curiosity towards how one's body uniquely experiences the emotional patterns. I highly recommend this training for anyone who wants to expand their range of emotional expression whether for personal or professional reasons, and do so in a healthy way, as well as anyone looking to increase their emotional literacy in daily life. ”
